Section 41 of PACE tells us that the police are able to detain a person for 24 hours but that being with the permission of a senior officer or above. However, now they can organise a 36 hour detention due to the Criminal Justice Act 2003. They are able to do this without charge.
Under the circumstance that the offence is not ordinary and therefore not arrestable, the suspect must either be charged or released. if the offence is really serious, and the police apply, the Magistrates' are able to order the suspect to be detained tor 96 hours maximum.
There are different time limits on detention that come with an arrest:
The suspect can be held for 6 hours after a first review by the police
The limit can go to +9 hours after a second or further review by the police
+12 hours if the detention is authorised by a Senior Officer
The police have the right to hold a suspect for 24 hours if the charge required UNLESS
It cant be that the suspect is held 36 hours after an application to court for a warrant of further detention and also +36 hours for further detention by court and an extension of that further detention
The maximum length of detention before charge is 96 hours.
If we look section H of PACE we see that suspected terrorists can be held for up to 28 days.
